The Society is proud to collaborate with several organizations:
North Carolina Collection
The North Carolina Collection is dedicated to preserving literary, visual, and artifactual materials illustrating four centuries of the colony and state of North Carolina. The collection comprises three divisions: the Research Library, North Carolina Collection Gallery, and Photographic Archives. Since its founding the Society has always provided financial support for the North Carolina Collection.
North Carolina Office of Archives and History
The Office of Archives and History’s mission is to collect, preserve, and utilize the state’s historic resources so that present and future residents may better understand their history. They safeguard the documentary and material evidence of past generations for the education of all citizens and the protection of their democratic rights by:
- Collecting, preserving and managing archival materials, state and local records and public information
- Researching, writing and distributing popular and scholarly works on North Carolina history
- Identifying, protecting and enhancing historic properties and archaeological sites
- Preserving, interpreting and maintaining important state historic sites and landmarks
- Operating programs of technical, professional and financial assistance for private and public history projects
- Collecting, preserving and displaying artifacts to educate the public about the state’s past
Supporting National History Day and the subvention of the North Carolina Historical Review are two major commitments of the Society. A new undertaking is called ANCHOR; it is an enhanced online North Carolina curriculum.
Carolina K-12
Carolina K-12 (formerly the NC Civic Education Consortium) is a program of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Public Humanities and works to extend the resources of the University to North Carolina’s K-12 educators. Carolina K-12 offers free, high-quality professional development programs for North Carolina teachers. Each program or workshop includes presentations by top scholars, innovative lesson plans, interactive pedagogical training, and immersive experiences. Our programs support educators by:
- Deepening teacher content knowledge through exchanges with university scholars, authors, artists, performers, and other humanities professionals
- Exploring innovative teaching strategies through pedagogical training
- Offering ready-to-implement, effective and engaging curriculum materials
- Affirming Carolina’s strong appreciation for the difficult work of teachers and the challenges they face
Annual William C. Friday Teacher Retreats are funded by the Society in collaboration with Carolina K-12.
Southern Oral History Program
Since 1973, the Southern Oral History Program has worked to preserve the voices of the southern past. They have collected 6,000 interviews with people from all walks of life—from mill workers to civil rights leaders to future presidents of the United States. Made available through UNC’s renowned Southern Historical Collection online, these interviews capture the vivid personalities, poignant personal stories, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that bring history to life. Crriculum development, especially in civil rights, is the focus of the Society’s interaction with the SOHP.
